About ATN

The Air Technology Network (ATN) is an interactive television (ITV) network that combines a live TV-receive-only (TVRO) satellite system along with wire-line audioconferencing system to provide two-way audio interaction;  ITV emulates the classroom environment at a distance.  ATN has a one-way video uplink at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, reaching over 350 classrooms within the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) and 13 locations in Europe and the Western Pacific, receive-only downlinks.  ATN uses compressed digital video (CDV), which greatly reduces the cost of transmission, but still provides high quality, full motion video.  The connection to Europe is being made through the Global Broadcast Service with a gateway uplink at Norfolk, Virginia. WestPac is being reached by using Hughes, Inc. gateway in California.  Since its development in 1991, ATN has been used to provide continuing education & training to over 20,000 students per year (2,000 broadcast hours resulting in over 150,000 student training hours per year).  The network is managed by the ATN Program Management Office, which is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The PMO coordinates the broadcast schedule for all the users and oversees the technical operation and development of the network. The PMO (HQ Air University OL-A) is a division of the HQ Air University A4/6, Education Logistics and Communications Directorate located at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

ATN is fully compatible with the Air National Guard’s Warrior Network, and ATN serves as the gateway for all other ITV programming within DOD.  This larger consortium of DOD users (including Army, Navy, AF Reserve, Defense Logistics Agency, and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute) is known as the Defense Education & Training Network (DETN).  These DOD networks are part of the larger federal government system, the Government Education and Training Network (GETN), which ATN pioneered.  GETN is a network of networks operated by a consortium of 17 federal agencies.  With over 10,000 scheduled hours of broadcasting each year, from 7 uplinks reaching out to over 2,200 receive sites, GETN offers high-quality, low-cost ITV with virtually limitless distribution capability within the US and overseas.
